Katrin Berger: Back by Popular Demand

by Sandra Castillo for Riding Magazine

The German Oldenburg Verband (GOV) brings the third session in this series of its important professional development program to America during November 3-4, 2007. Leading this program is Katrin Burger, 2004 World Champion of Young Dressage Horses and currently the Deputy Breeding Director of the German Oldenburg Verband in Vechta, Germany.

Officials of the Oldenburg Verband acknowledge that American warmblood breeders are, in general, producing better foals each year. “Once top USA-born foals are produced, our next priority is to bring along these young prospects so they live up to their breeding,” says Lynn Randle-DeGour of Red Hawk Ranch.

Americans must wonder why Holland & Germany dominate global events like the Olympics and the Equestrian World Cup(s). A multitude of factors can answer that question – factors ranging from centuries’ long equestrian heritage –to– incredible warmblood genetics –to– the well defined process of starting, then sustaining the development of young horses.

Katrin will be using a number of guest riders to demonstrate young horse training techniques for developing young horses for the future. This will not be a clinic focused on the rider — but more a symposium series that l details the process that Germans use to develop young horses – steps from “backing” through [about] second level dressage. Verband officials remark that this process for young horses should be the same regardless of equestrian discipline (showjumping or dressage), through the first year (or two) of development.

The long term ‘vision’ for this series is to provide an educational platform for professional trainers specializing in young horses so that America can produce its own Holga Finkens, Katrin Burgers, Johannes Westendarps, and Ulf Möllers.

During this two day programme, Red Hawk Ranch will offer:

>Two separate silent auctions for Live Foal Guarantee breedings (fresh cooled) for [ -1- ] “Herzberg“ (courtesy of German Dressage) and for [ -2- ] either “Rubino Bellissimo,“ “Wonderful,“ or “Monserrat“ (courtesy of Violet Jen)

> Manufacturer & retailer bazaar with their goods and services

> A hosted & narrated wine tasting after the last ride on Day-One

> A sporthorse nutrition seminar (provided by event sponsor KAM equine nutritionals)

> A videographer to record the event onto DVD (for a nominal fee for those in attendance)

Join Katrin and her guest riders & young warmblood horses for this important two-day event, November 3-4 at Red Hawk Ranch in Murrieta, California. Visit www.redhawkranch.tv for program details, registration, and driving directions. For this two day professional development event, advance tuition is only $50 for GOV members, only $75 for non-members, and tuition-free for Katrin’s guest/demo riders.

Young Horse Program Demo Horse/Rider Combinations

The program for November’s Young Horse Development Program is starting to take shape and exciting horse/rider combinations are quickly committing:

-Kathleen Raine will be back, this time with Sheryl Kunkle’s 6 yr Mantika

-David Wightman will ride his new horse Wiandro

-Niki Hall will ride Kathleen and David’s young horse, Volando again, so we can see the improvements since the January program

-Nacho Moran will ride his mare Gianna

-Merrie Veldon will bring the 4 yr old Oldenberg stallion, Sandrome back

-Timothy Mellott will be joining us this time with a just started horse

-Jennifer Hoffman will be bringing a new 4 yr old that she and Jurgen just imported

-Kim Kulesa will be bringing a young Stallion who has just started work

Space permitting, we hope to also see Elizabeth Hopps McConnell with her Rubin Royale 4 yr old, Polly Limond with her 3yr old mare, Robin Garrett and Jaye Cherry.

We’ll be following the same basic program as January:  The progressive training and expectations from backing thru the 3rd year under saddle.  Sessions will be organized by time under saddle (<6 months, 6-12 Months, 1 yr, 2 yr and 3 yr).

Demonstrations will be focused on providing examples of typical training stages and solutions to common issues as well as preparation for the Young Horse Tests.
