Red Hawk Ranch is the proud owner of Diego Garcia
After consulting with Thomas Casper of Gestüt Birkhof (near Stuttgart, Germany) regarding the spectacular colt Diego Garcia, we were determined not to be outbid during Baden Württemberg foal auction. With the assistance of Drs. Joachim and Kerstin Gläser, Bootin’ Digger Equine at Red Hawk Ranch is now the proud owner of Diego Garcia who will remain in Germany for the next two years.
Our newest colt, his sire Denaro, and his grandsire De Niro (whose German FN Dressage Index Rank in 2002 was # 10) descend from Donnerhall. Ausgewählte Hengste Deutschlands notes that “Donnerhall’s progeny are victorious on all fronts, at foal shows, mare shows, federal championships, and in advanced dressage . . . ”
De Niro’s damsire, Akzent II is regarded as one of the best sires of rideability in modern sporthorse breeding. This factor is proven in De Niro’s 100 Day Test at Adelheidsdorf where his extraordinarily high “Rittigkeit” score of 145.41 placed him # 1 of 50. This damsire lineage is traced back to the East Prussian [Trakehner] foundation sire, Abglanz.
Offspring by De Niro have captured top prices at Vechta and Verden foal auctions, including Diego Velasquez who was sold to Austria in 1998 for 70,000DM.
Diego Garcia’s damsire is Lanthano (descendent of Der Löwe, producer of significant sporthorses of great expression) who won his 100 Day Test in 1992 and thereafter qualified as a showjumper in the 1994 and 1995 Bundeschampionships. By 1997, Lanthano had achieved victories at FEI Level dressage.
Lanthano’s offspring have attained great achievement also. Most notably, Lettina II, under Nicole Casper, was the 1997 Bundeschampion, and the 1998 Vice-Champion. During the 2000 Bundeschampionships, Lanthano progeny competed in dressage, showjumping, and three day eventing.
Further influence within Diego Garcia’s damside is Holsteiner stallion Tin Rocco who topped the 1990 German FN Breed Index for Three Day Eventing.

Red Hawk Ranch is the proud owner of Delaware Bay
Delaware Bay is another filly that we purchased at the Baden Württemberg foal auction. Her great-grandfather is Donnerhall.
Her sire, Dacaprio, is by Hannoverian Davignon I who is ranked eight places higher than Rubinstein I in the 2002 German FN Dressage Breeding Index. Davignon I, the 1992 Bundeschampion, has sired over 30 Approved Stallions.
In 1988, Dacaprio’s Trakehner damsire, Caprimond, was Vice-Bundeschampion, and winner of the Adelheidsdorf Stallion Performance Test. He consistently produces offspring with very correct warmblood conformation.
Delaware Bay’s Westfalen damsire, Lanciano is a grandson of Landgraf I, who is truly a legend amongst German warmblood breeders, with over 130 Approved sons!
Further influence in Delaware Bay’s damside descends from Grande [whose] “legacy is the best performance bloodline in the world . . . [Grande] sired a line of great dressage horses, and the most famous is Olympic Gold Medallist Gigolo ridden by Isabell Werth.”1

Red Hawk Ranch is the proud owner of Serendipity
This year’s Baden Württemberg foal show in Riedlinger [located more
than an hour south of Stuttgart] showcased an incredible array of
truly well bred warmbloods. We purchased three super foals that
we’ll describe over the next week.
The first is a strikingly attractive black filly named Serendipity.
Her sire, Sir Oldenburg, descends from impressive Selle Français
and KWPN lines. At the Y2002 Zweibrucken Foal Championships, a Sir
Oldenburg offspring took the top score.
Sir Oldenburg’s damsire Contender was the champion of the 1987
Stallion Performance Test at Adelheidsdorf. Contender is by
Calypso II who in recent years was simultaneously listed in
German FN Breed Indexing (based on offspring competition successes)
at # 2 in Jumping and # 19 in Dressage.
Serendipity’s damside may be even more impressive. Her damsire Rubinstein I
is described by Ausgewählte Hengste Deutschlands: “He was bred from
[and contributed to] undoubtedly the most significant dressage dynasty
that the world has ever seen.”
Further contributing to Serendipity’s damside is Trakehner stallion
Karon who sired a number of approved son’s including perennial
leader on the FN Confirmation Index, Caprimond (who in turn
sired Y2002 Trakehner Stallion of the Year, Hohenstein).

Redhawk
Maik & Joachim will be back in California in about two weeks, delivering
more jumping horses. Redhawk looks as though he’d started his
winter coat already. Maik says that it gets cold starting this time
of the year in Germany. That’s why he comes to California so many
times every year.
Here’s another photo of our newest colt.

Back From Germany
Lynn and I arrived home from Germany last night. Although our trip was successful, it didn’t go exactly as planned … we originally planned well-needed R&R … however, this last past week involved horse related side trips . . . not exactly like a vacation on a Caribbean beach..
First, Dewey Beach was the top filly in the dressage category at the Verband Elite Foal Championships in Rheinböllen! Her final score was 8.93 (out of 10). The jury of judges (Peter Linn, Thomas Casper, and third judge) really liked Dewey Beach — a lot ! She’s by Y2000 Vice World Champion D’Olympic out of Wanja (Wolkenstein II x Rubinstein).
I took lots of photos that day … we were fortunate that Beate (Katharina’s Godmother) braided & groomed while Joachim (PhD in Heidelberg) & his sister, Kerstin (DVM, PhD), handled our mare and foal throughout the afternoon. They’re truly incredible friends.
After the Foal Championships, we did spend two quiet days at a hotel on the Mosel River . . . just vegging and walking around town. It’s the heart of the German wine region … we had a chance to try lots of super German wines (which are remarkably unlike California wines).
Then we traveled down to the Black Forest …. That’s where our itinerary changed.
Joachim and Kerstin Gläser drove down from Obermoschel to take us to Gestüt Schlossaecker where German Federal Champion, French Kiss, stands. He’s an incredible stallion and we’ve already bred him to our Trakehner mare, LaRochelle, who resides on the Gläser farm.
While visiting French Kiss, Katrin Burger and the Gläser’s told us we really needed to “experience” the Baden Württemberg Elite Foal Show the next day. Well, we could relate to that … Dewey Beach had completed the Rheinböllen foal show just a few days earlier.
It turns out that this Baden Württemberg foal show in Riedlinger was actually a Thursday afternoon foal auction located way, way out in the remote hinterlands of Southern Germany. In general, the foals at Riedlinger were absolutely incredible. We purchased three super foals!
We’ll bring two fillies ( Davignon x Lanciano and Sir Oldenberg x Rubinstein I) home with Dewey Beach around Thanksgiving, while leaving our auction colt (Deniro x Lanthano x Tin Rocco x Furioso II) in Germany.
We didn’t get back Obermoschel until 1:30AM on Friday morning. Oh well, not much R&R that night.
Friday, we vegged. Saturday we caught a Bullet Train from Frankfurt to Hamburg. Vicki and Maik picked us up at the train station, we checked into Schwerin’s Niederländischerhof on Karl-Marx Strasse by 4PM.
On Sunday, we drove to Maik’s 220 acre farm. Vicki presented their 11 week old foal (who was champion of his “keuring” and qualified for the All-Germany foal championship). This colt is incredibly well bred (Rosario x Sandro Hit) and he can really move! Maik and I shook hands, before celebrating the sale with a champagne toast. We’ll leave him (Redhawk) on Maik’s farm along with our Riedlinger colt (Diego Garcia) until they are three.
More news later.
